Plantago major; The Greater Plantain has a peculiar distribution on Iceland. On the one hand it can be found in more or less urbanized localities on trodden grounds -like in Europe. On the other hand it also grows - espaecially in the south - on thermal soils. It would be interesting to study the differences between the two populations (genetics, history of settlement). I, though have no information on this. As far as I understand only the nominate subspecies grows on Iceland, P. major ssp. intermedia does not grow on Iceland.
It is a member of the plantain family (Plantaginaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Græðisúra.
