FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Veronica fructans, Rock Speedwell, Steindepla

Veronica fructans; the rock speedwell is one of many speedwell species on Iceland. This species can be found commonly on dry and gravelly soils. The red ring in between the blue and white parts of the inside of the flower is characteristic for this species and sets it apart from other speedwells growing on dry soils.
Traditionally speedwell species have been classified in the figwort family (Scrophulariaceae) but recently they have been included in the plantain family (Plantaginaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Steindepla.
