FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Trichophorum cespitosum, Deergrass, Fitjaskúfur

Trichophorum cespitosum; the Deergrass is very similar to the spike-rushes. It can easily be recognized because it - unlike any spike-rush - forms dens tufts. There is als another small but very characeristic element that differentiate it form the spike-rushes. This is a tiny but distinct leaf in the lower part of the stem. It grows on wet soils and is common in most coastal regions. It is a member of the sedge family (Cyperaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Fitjaskúfur.
