Stellaria crassifolia; the Fleshy Stitchwort is a chickweed that is not uncommon on Iceland but easily overlooked. It grows mainly in the lowland regions and major valleys in the northern part of Iceland. It grows on moist grounds. As a Stellaria species it can be characterised by their flehy leaves (a trait it shares with the saltmarsh stitchwort: Stellaria humifusa). These two species can be best differentiated by their sepal tips: they are sharpely pointed in the Fleshy Stitchwort but blunt in the Saltmarsh Stitchwort. Obviously the saltmarsh stitchwort is found near sea on salty/brackish soils where the fleshy chickweed grows on fresh-water fed bogs and other moist soils.
It is a member of the Pink family (Caryophyllaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Stjönuarfi.
