FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Saxifraga rosacea, Irish Saxifrage, Toppasteinbrjótur

Saxifraga rosacea; there are many saxifrage species on Iceland. In the pas the Irish Saxifrage has been regarded as a subspecies of the tufted Saxifrage (S. caespitosa). The two species though are easily distinguished. The Tufted Saxifrage has a foliage far more condensed (cespitose) than the Irish Saxifrage. Due to this the individual leaves of the Tufted Saxifrage are pointed upwards where in the Irish Saxifrage they are more spreading horizontally. The photo's tell the story. It is member of the saxifrage family (Saxifragaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Toppasteinbrjótur.
