FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Pyrola minor, Common Wintergreen, Klukkublóm

Pyrola minor; the common wintergreen is a small plant ( up to 15 cm.) that grows in woodlands and sheltered places. It is common throughout most regions of Iceland. Less common are the arctic wintergreen (P. grandiflora) - which differs by its larger and more open flowers from which a characteristic curved style can be seen - and the serrated wintergreen (Orthilla secunda) which has its flowers typically arranged on one side of the stem.
All three species used to be members of the wintergreen family (Pyrolaceae). Recent DNA studies show they are so closely related to the heathers that they are now included in the heather family (Ericaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Klukkublóm.
