FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Potamogeton praelongus, Long-stalked Pondweed, Langnykra

Potamogeton praelongus; The Long-stalked Pondweed is a rather large aquatic plant that can reach up to 3m in length.
  - The leaves are long: up to 20cm long an up to 2½cm broad (10long/1broad minimum). The leaves are sessile, partially clasping the stem. The stipules are 4 to 7cm long and more or less translucent. The stems tend to grow zig-zag from leaf tot leaf.
  - The flowers appear in a terminal spike and lack perianth leaflets.
  - It grows in deep fresh water and therefore not easily spotted, except for loose stems beeching along shores. The plant is found in miscellaneous localities in lowland regions. However, I would not be surprised if it occurs in yet more unknown locations, as it can lead a rather hidden life in the deep.
  - It is a member of the Potamogetonaceae, the Pondweed family The Icelandic name for this species is Langnykra.
