Pedicularis flammea; the red-tipped lousewort can be found in highlands and mountainous regions. It is however, quite rare on eastern, southern and western coastal mountains, revealing a preference for a more continental climate. In fact, this beauty is a pearl of Iceland' s interrior! Due to its conspicuous red-tipped yellow flowers and its (nearly always) red-to-purple colored leaves, it can not be confused with other species. In Europe it only grows in Scandinavia and Iceland.
It is a member of the broomrape family (Orobranchaceae) but in the past it was considered to be a member of the figwort family (Scrophulariaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Tröllastakkur.
