FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Lychnis flos-cuculi, Ragged Robin, Munkahetta

Lychnis flos-cuculi; the Ragged Robin is an eye-catching pink perennial herb, up to 30cm tall.
The leaves are opposite and rather narrow lanceolate, 5mm to 1cm broad and 4 to 7cm long.
The flowers are unique for the fora of Iceland. The 5-parted flowers have petals which are deeply split into 4 soft lobes (hence the name "ragged").
The species can best be found south of the Eyafjallajökull/Mýrdallsjökull where it is a most common.
It is a member of the Pink family (Caryophyllaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Munkahetta.
