FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Kobresia myosuroides, Bellard's Kobresia, Þursskegg

Kobresia myosuroides; the Bellard's Kobresia is member of the sedge family growing almost everywhere on Iceland. It grows on exposed drier soils in low and highlands. It has a grass-like appearance. It is a heavily tufted plant with long narrow (needle-like) leaves. The inflorescence stem consists of one spike. This spike consists loosely arranged spikelets. The spikelets each have one male and one female flower. Most characteristic is the broad membanous top of the scales of each spikelet.
It is a member of the Sedge family (Cyperaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Þursskegg.
