FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Juncus bufonius, Toad Rush, Lækjasef

Juncus bufonius; The Toad Rush is quite similar to the Frog Rush (Juncus ranarius). Both are low growing plants, usually on moist/wet marshy open grounds as both are annuals. For the lay-men and -women the easiest way to distinguish them is by looking at how they grow: the frog rush (J. ranarius) always grows protrate (= growing horizontally over the soil), whereas the toad rush sends its flowering shoots mainly vertically. The Icelandic name of this species is Lækjasef.
It is a member of the rush family (Juncaceae).
