FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Juncus alpinoarticulatus, Alpine Rush, Mýrasef

Juncus alpinoarticulatus; The Alpine rush grows commonly on many wet soils and along streams on Iceland. It is chararcterised by the many few flowerd inflorecences on each culm. Another characteristic feature is is the upright impression the culms with their inflorescences give. As such it differs from the Jointed rush in having more upright growing flower stalks. It is about 20 to 40 cm tall. The Icelandic population of J. alpinoarticulatus belongs to the subspecies alpestris. In the past it has been referred to by some authors as an independent species being Juncus alpinus. The alpine rush and the jointed rush are closely related. The Icelandic name of this species is Mýrasef.
It is a member of the rush family (Juncaceae).
