FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Gentianella amarella, Autumn Gentian, Grænvöndur

Gentianella amarella; The autumn gentian is can be found in most regions of Iceland except for the barren highlands. It flowers later than most other gentians (august). Other characteristics by which they can be recognized are the lighter colored flowers (be aware of the white flower form of Gentiana nivalis = alpine gentian) ranging from white to dull/light purple. Another characteristic difference compared to the alpine gentian is that it forms well developed stems with leaves shaped narrowly (elliptical/lanceolate).
It is a member of the gentian family (Gentianaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Grænvöndur.
