FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Cornus suecica, Dwarf Cornel, Skollaber

Cornus suecica; The dwarf cornel grows in northern Iceland. It is a conspicuous plant with opposite arranged leaves. It grows in heather lands. It is also peculiar: the white "petals" are not petals but merely white leaves. The purplish-black tiny elements in the middle are actually the individual flowers. Elsewhere this plant grows in Northern Europe (North-Eastern European countries, Germany, Netherlands, British Isles and Scandinavia). Other cornels are shrubs but the dwarf cornel is a low herbaceas perennial plant.
It is a member of the dogwood family(Cornaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Skollaber.
