Carex subspathacea; The Hoppner's Sedge is a very small (low) species confined to saltmarshes along the coasts of Iceland. In the second half of summer they have already shedded their ripe fruits and inflorescences. It can than be recognized by its tendency to grow mats of small plants in salty environments (coastal salt-marshes). The leaves are relatively speaking rather long and narrow. This species is actually an American element of the Icelandic flora (see also page on Carex lyngbyei). In the Amerca's it is only found in the northern regions of that continent (Alsaka, Canada, Greenland.
It is a member of the sedge family (Cyperaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Flæðastör.
