Carex echinata; The Star Sedge is quite common in the coastal regions of Iceland. It is a rather light-green sedge which can be easily identified by the spreading utricles (with rather long beaks). As such the spikes have a rather "starry" appearance. This appearance is strengthened by the fact that this is a two-styled sedge, so the utricles tend to be more lens-shaped (flat) rather than globose. The spikes are found at the top of the stems, but not compact. It grows along bogs and other wet habitats.
It is a member of the sedge family (Cyperaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Ígolstör.
