FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Calamagrostis stricta, Narrow Small-reed, Hálmgresi

Calamagrostis stricta; the Narrow Small-reed is common rather tall (50cm) grass. It is a panicle-bearing grass with one-flowered spikelets on a usually pinkish panicle. It can best be distinguished from other species with single-flowered spikelets (like Agrostis, Bent species) by the hairs on the base of the spikelets. These hairs grow on the base of the lemmas. It grows on all types of wet soils, like river banks and soggy soils.

The Narrow Small-reed is a member of the grass family (Poaceae, also known as Gramineae). The Icelandic name of the Narrow Small-reed is Hálmgresi.
