Cakile arctica; The Arctic Sea Rocket is an annual plant of sandy and fine-gravelly sea shores. It is well adapted to a salty environment which can be noted by the fleshy (succulent) leaves, stems and fruits. The C. arctica plants growing on Iceland are very close relatives of the more common European C. maritima (also called sea rockets in English). On Iceland they are most common on southern and western sea shores.
It is a member of the cabbage (= mustard) family) (Brassicaceae formerly known as Cruciferae). The Icelandic name of this species is Fjörukál.
