Alopecurus pratensis; the Meadow Foxtail is a rather tall grass with spike like inflorescences: the pedicels below the spikelets are clearly present and branched. The spikelike appearance is due to the fact that all spikelets are pressed against the main stem thus forming a cylindrical inflorescence. This inflorescence is about 5-10 cm long and 5 -10 mm thick.
The Meadow Foxtail has been introduced on Iceland but is now common around human settlements, cultivated grounds and along ditches and roads. It prefers rather dry (well drained) soils.
The Meadow Foxtail is a member of the grass family (Poaceae, also known as Gramineae). The Icelandic name of the Meadow Foxtail is Háliðagras.
